Rainbow Meditation

The Tibetan word for the hues of a rainbow is ‘ja’ འཇའ་ – a nicely balanced looking word, which is joyfully composed in rainbow coloured Uchen script.

There is a particular stylisation of how rainbows are depicted in traditional Thangka painting. These don’t necessarily follow natures order of rainbow colours, but do give a vibrant translucent quality; which shimmer with a typical wiggly line that runs down the centre of each rainbow like beam.

As the small calligraphy on the piece refers – We are taught, as any meditation practice involving a deity or mandala; that the visualisation is not to be as anything solid, but translucent just like the vivid colours of a rainbow, which are impossible to catch hold of.
