For the second time running, Tashi Mannox is invited to contribute to the 2023 World Calligraphy Biennale of Jeollabuk-do 세계서예전북비엔날레 in South Korea.

This World class calligraphy biennale was founded in 1997 and marks its 14th anniversary. An international calligraphy comprehensive event with 26 years of history and tradition, boasting the world’s largest calligraphy event – 30 exhibition halls house the best of international calligraphy artists, which runs from 22nd Sept to 22nd October 2023.

The exhibition title is ‘Virtue of Relentless Creation’ with the theme ‘vividness’ which consists of 3,200 calligraphers from 40 countries.

Tashi personally attended the opening ceremony on 22nd Sept, and the International conference 23rd at the Sori Arts Center. This presented a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow calligraphers and followers from South Korea, as well as from China, Japan, Mongolia, Italy, Egypt and many more internationals.

In response to this privileged invitation, Tashi especially created this piece ‘Light of The Awakened’ – which maximises the vivid contrast between bright lustrous gold on a background of deep matt lazurite pigment.  A 23.5ct gold leafed Tibetan syllable ‘mum’ blazes high above clouds in the vast expanse of space. This is the essence syllable of Shakyamuni Buddha – the fully awakened one.

Two lines of cursive Tibetan calligraphy translate as “brilliant rays of light stream from the body as if from the sun”

Created as a long vertical composition and superbly mounted as a traditional scroll format. As all the calligraphy pieces in the exhibition, this is a typical presentation of the Far Eastern calligraphy traditions.
