Opulence – To Grow Wealthy
An embellished earlier work from 2006 of the Tibetan word ཕྱུག་ཁྱད meaning “wealth,” illuminated in rich red with broad, free, and confident brushwork upon a matt black background of Japanese Sumi ink. This piece lay almost forgotten, uncertain for 20 years because it did not quite live up to its meaning and needed another dimension.
However, new inspiration completed the artwork with the addition of a rain of precious jewels, embossed and gilded with a celebratory mix of bright lemon Indian gold, rich 23.6 ct gold, moon gold and rose gold leaf.
The small white line of text at the bottom left of the piece is ཕྱུག་པར་འགྱུར means “to grow/become wealthy,” This may not necessarily refer to material wealth, but whatever privilege of riches they may be, wealth can only be acquired through the accumulation of merit (good Karma) and skilful management. As an artwork, this could benefit from being hung in the back left “feng shui” wealth corner of an office, shop, restaurant or home.
Sumi ink and earth red pigment with four different gold leaf types on heavy watercolour paper. Dimensions 56 x 76 cm, created 2006 – 2026.
