There are at least five general types of people motivated to learn Tibetan calligraphy:
Those attracted purely by the aesthetics of the Tibetan writing systems: people may enjoy the process of learning to write, as a hobby as well as for the therapeutic benefits of focus and calmness of mind they may experience. Practicing an ancient tradition of great integrity and meaning can also give the assured feeling of connection to something authentic with all the associated wisdoms.
Those who are already calligraphers and artists of other traditions may enjoy to learn a different tradition or improve on what they already know, which stimulates and challenges using a pen in a different manner from what they are accustomed to. It is understood that learning another writing system can help improve one’s already familiar practice. Calligraphers and artists may also wish to integrate Tibetan writing into their own creative output of artworks and design.
For students of Tibetology and the Tibetan language. The art of writing Tibetan is seldom taught properly or to a high standard expected of a Tibetan scholar. Improving writing skills also helps; not only writing with mindful dignity and a sense of honoured pride, but also with speed and clarity. Learning the alphabet is an essential foundation to read and write Tibetan coherently.
Then there are Tibetan Buddhists, who may also be motivated by some or all of the above. Learning to read and write Tibetan is a golden key to open the great wealth of Dharma held within Tibetan literature, such as within the 108 volumes of the Buddha’s teachings ‘Kangur’ and ‘Tengyur’; 224 volume commentaries to both the ‘Sutras’ and ‘Tantras’.
For deeper and more personal spiritual practices: learning to read the Tibetan scriptures, mantras and seed syllables, more especially for visualisation meditation. Learning to write mantras and seed syllables of deities is one of the best ways to memorise for clear and correct visualisation. As well as to understand what each element of a seed syllable represents symbolically and in sound, so that the mantra can be pronounced authentically correct. Such deeper understanding is only possible with a firm knowledge of the alphabet. As the Tibetan Uchen script was originally formulated as a vehicle to preserve and communicate Buddha Dharma, each letter of the Tibetan alphabet is considered a Bodhisattva.
A Buddhist well established in Tibetan calligraphy may consider the meritorious act of working as a scribe – to copy Dharma manuscripts for their preservation and to honour their spiritual value in the form of beautifully illuminated manuscripts. This is very much a labour of love and devotion.
