The wholeness of hum
It is said that the sound of hūṃ syllable resonates and contains the entire cannon of the holy Dharma.
Originating in Sanskrit, hūṃ literally means ‘gather together’. More elaborately, the five parts which make up this syllable represents the five wisdoms of the five Buddha families and the five elements, all embodied within its blessed potency.
Pure-gold gilded on this folio of Bhutanese desho paper, the hūṃ character resides within its own aura of mica ink. To the side are scribed the words in the classical Uchen script:
‘The very nature of the five Buddha families is complete within hūṃ.’
