SUMMARY:The Sacred Art of Tibetan Seed Syllables
DESCRIPTION:The Dzogchen Community UK welcomes back Tashi Mannox for another weekend workshop at the Shang Shung Institute in London. \nThis calligraphy workshop is especially informative for fellow Tibetan Buddhists for clarity of their visualisation practices. SUMMARY:A week of Yoga\, Meditation and Creativity in Provence 2025
DESCRIPTION:This autumn retreat offers a holistic experience in both body and mind\, while cultivating heightened awareness through yoga\, meditation and creativity. DESCRIPTION:For the first time in over a decade\, Tashi teaches the art of writing the cursive Umé class of Tibetan calligraphy. \n \n  \n \nFollowing the resounding success of this year’s Tibetan Uchen calligraphy retreat (as captured above) \nTashi offers another precious opportunity to study and practice in the beautiful and peacefully conducive atmosphere of Le Grand Banc – An extraordinary secluded hilltop private hamlet\, surrounded by the wild nature of the Luberon hills in Provence\, France. In a time marked by war and natural disasters\, this exhibition offers an auspicious sign—an artistic response to uncertainty\, weaving together diverse perspectives on continuity\, harmony\, and renewal. \nEach artist presents a personal interpretation of the endless knot\, creating a dialogue between tradition and contemporary expression. DESCRIPTION:The UK Dzogchen Community is pleased to host a one-day Tibetan Calligraphy Workshop with artist and master craftsman Tashi Mannox. \nThis is a rare opportunity to study and practise this ancient art form with one of its foremost exponents. \n \nIn the workshop\, Tashi will begin by teaching the correct meditative approach required for this sacred art. He will train participants in reproducing the precise proportions of the letters of the Tibetan alphabet. This gentle discipline is the foundation for correctly visualising and forming the seed syllables and mantras of the Tibetan Buddhist deities. SUMMARY:Exploring Mantra in form and sound
DESCRIPTION:The Shang Shung UK Institute in London is happy to welcome back British born Tashi Mannox\, who previously taught at the Shang Shung Institute\, many times in London\, Venice and Merigar West in Tuscany. \nThis calligraphy workshop is especially informative for fellow Tibetan Buddhists for clarity of their visualisation practices. By learning how to form the stage by stage proportionate construction of  sacred syllables\, in beautiful harmonious calligraphy and in the sound quality of mantra\, is a valuable aid for Mahayana and Vajrayana practitioners. \nNo prior Tibetan calligraphy skills are needed to attend this workshop\, but for those already practiced in this scriptural art\, my find the workshop elevating. A list of recommended materials and writing implements will be shared once enrolled. \nThe workshop concludes with a calligraphy demonstration in explanation of the essential meditational approach to creativity within the field of Dharma art. \nPaper\, ink and brushes will be provided. \nA seminar is given by Tashi on the evening of Friday 7th \nAn exhibition of Tashi’s previously unseen artworks will be on display at the Shang Shung Institute during the workshop. \n\n \nThe cost for the weekend workshop is 250 GBP\, there are concessions for 180 GBP for those with more limited financial abilities.

SUMMARY:Meditation and Enso Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Tashi for a day of exploration in the meditative approach to creativity. Experience the creation of ensō as well as sacred seed syllables of the Tibetan calligraphy tradition Tashi upholds. \nThis is the first time Tashi teaches on the West Coast! \n \nThe Japanese tradition of ensō is chosen as an effective method which is suitable for anybody to partake. As the ensō’s straightforward simplicity is beyond any need to learn the complexities of a foreign language such as Japanese or Tibetan. \nThe mindful ritual of creating an Ensō naturally challenges the practitioner to be in an undistracted present state of nowness during the creative process\, observing the grasping tendency of hesitation and anticipation – qualities one would observe and tame as a meditator as well as during yoga. \nAs once the brush loaded with ink strikes the paper\, there is nothing more to do but follow through in undistracted present awareness\, while mastering control of the arm and hand from the core of one’s being in heart and mind.\nIt is taught that “perfection is in the imperfection” as there should be no attachment to the created Ensō\, resulting beautiful or ugly is inconsequential\, but an honest recording of that moment in time\, which nakedly reveals our pure state of mind. \n  \nWhat is Ensō? \nBelonging to the Japanese Zen tradition of calligraphy\, An ensō is simply a circle painted with one brushstroke\, in a single breath of awareness. A meditative gesture of that moment in time it is created. Yet it is deeply symbolic on many levels\, which expresses the totally of our pure true nature of mind.\n\nAn ensō is created during a specifically mindful ritual\, a guided exercise of meditation in action. With full attention and physical fluidity\, any hesitation or desire to create perfection is challenged with ones expectations and apprehensions. Clearly seen as a recording of that moment in time it is created. It is to be a selfless practice in the present state of nowness.

SUMMARY:The Paleography of Tibetan Calligraphy.
DESCRIPTION:Tashi speaks on the history and development of Tibetan written language to the present day – its relationship to Sanskrit and the many different Tibetan script styles – both geographically and their different roles within the Tibetan culture. \nTraditional tools and penmanship will also be explained. \n \nEver since he was an artistically inclined teenager\, English born Tashi Mannox has practised the Tibetan writing systems. After committing to Tibetan Buddhist monastic precepts at the age of 21\, he further refined this discipline while working as a scribe\, meticulously copying ancient manuscripts for their preservation. \nIn 2000\, some 17 years later\, he left the monastery to pursue a career as an internationally exhibiting artist. \nHe is now recognised as the world’s foremost ambassadors of Tibetan Calligraphy\, a teacher and author. Tashi has now been invited to give an exclusive lecture at the prestigious Letter Exchange. \nLocated a short walk from the British Museum.

DESCRIPTION:Join Dharma-artist Tashi Mannox to explore a meditative approach to creativity. \nCreating an ensō is an exercise of meditation. As a chosen practice for this workshop –  the straightforward simplicity of an ensō is beyond any need to learn the complexities of a foreign language such as Japanese or Tibetan. \nThe traditional art of creating a circular ensō ink painting\, for a Japanese Zen practitioner\, is as much about present awareness of application\, as it is less concerned with the end result of the artwork. It is the act itself –  a meditative ceremony of mindful integrity. \nCreating an ensō is an exercise of meditation. As a chosen practice for this workshop\,  the straightforward simplicity of an ensō is beyond any need to learn the complexities of a foreign language such as Japanese or Tibetan. \nThe application of an ensō is a pure and simple one stroke mark which illustrates nowness – in the naked state of mind with nowhere to hide. As once the brush strikes the paper there is no turning back\, one is committed to follow through\, with the quality of ones mind evident within the circular recording. \nLearn with Tashi to wield the ink loaded brush with an uninhibited and relaxed\, open yet disciplined\, state of mind. With a free meditative attitude of non-expectation\, without concerns of producing an impressive looking ensō\,  without anticipation and fear in the lack of ones abilities. Perfection is considered in the imperfection. It is what it is – without judgment\, a perfect representation of that pure moment of immersed\, creative focus. \n  \nParticipants will be provided with the use of a brush\, ink and paper.
